Attribution

unmap is built on open data. This page carries the credits in full, so the map itself can stay short.

What to display

The styles served from api.unmap.dev/styles already declare their own attribution, and MapLibre renders it. Leave the attribution control on and there is nothing else to do.

If you build your own control, show at minimum:

• © unmap © OpenStreetMap contributors on every map.
• The Mapterhorn and supplier attribution declared by the global relief source after activation.
• © NRCan MRDEM © Copernicus, linked to this page, for Canadian contours and the Canadian PNG relief.

Geocoding and routing responses carry no on-screen credit of their own, but the sources below still apply if you display or redistribute the results.

Basemap

Map tiles are cut from the Protomaps daily planet build.

• OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.
• Natural Earth, public domain.

Global Mapterhorn elevation

After global activation, relief and /elevation use Unmap terrain release 6: the pinned Mapterhorn 0.0.13 mosaic with an audited regional MRDEM-30 correction. The transition collar blends both sources. The MRDEM and Copernicus notices under Canadian elevation below also apply to this correction. Data licences belong to the suppliers; the project's code licence does not license these datasets. This list preserves the pinned Mapterhorn attribution catalogue used by release 6. It lists mosaic inputs, not exact per-pixel lineage. Keep each style source's declared attribution and the API response's credits.

This product was in part produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA.

Canadian elevation and regional correction

The regional correction in terrain release 6, retained Canadian PNG relief, contour lines and historical routing graphs derive from the Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM) published by Natural Resources Canada. Both notices below apply to these uses:

Place names and addresses

Geocoding is built from open sources, conflated into one corpus:

• OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.
• OpenAddresses. Licences vary by contributing authority and are listed with each source in the OpenAddresses registry.
• Statistics Canada, National Address Register (catalogue 46-26-0001), under the Open Government Licence - Canada.
• Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Geographical Names Database, under the Open Government Licence - Canada. This and Who's On First are where the Indigenous-language place names unmap returns come from.
• Who's On First, under CC BY 4.0.
• GeoNames, under CC BY 4.0.

Routing

Road network and turn restrictions from OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License, routed with Valhalla.

Time zones

Timezone lookup uses two datasets:

• The IANA Time Zone Database, which is in the public domain.
• Geographic boundaries from timezone-boundary-builder. The code is MIT. The boundary data is derived from OpenStreetMap and is under the Open Database License.

Corrections

Map data errors are best fixed at the source: an edit in OpenStreetMap reaches unmap on the next build. For anything else, including a credit you think is wrong or missing, write to hello@unmap.dev.
