Terms of Service

Effective 4 September 2026. Version 1.0.

unmap is operated by Maps & Apps Inc. ("unmap", "we"). These terms are between you and Maps & Apps Inc. You accept them by creating an account, using an API key, or calling the API.

Service

unmap provides developer APIs for worldwide map tiles and styles, geocoding, routing, accounts, and billing. Vector maps cover Web Mercator, zooms 0–14. Geocoding and routing remain Canada-scoped; these terms do not promise global geocoding or routing coverage.

For as long as your account is in good standing, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to call the API within your plan's limits and to use the responses in your own applications and services.

Accounts and keys

You are responsible for your account, API keys, origins, usage, and applications. Keep keys secret where possible, roll keys if exposed, and delete keys you no longer use. Test keys and demo keys are rate-limited and may change.

The dashboard uses a browser session. Application traffic uses API keys. A dashboard cookie is not an API credential, and an API key is not a dashboard login.

Everything done with your keys is treated as done by you. You must be able to enter a contract where you live, and you are responsible for anyone you let use your account.

Billing and limits

Plans include a monthly call allowance, counted per calendar month in UTC. Every request that passes authentication is one call, whatever the endpoint and whatever status it returns. Glyph and sprite fetches are authenticated and rate-limited but never metered, and dev-origin traffic is counted but never billed. Prices, included usage, overage rates, and origin limits are shown on the pricing page and in the dashboard.

Prices are in US dollars for every customer. Billing runs through Stripe. The monthly plan fee is charged in advance at the start of each billing period; metered overage is charged in arrears at the end of the period in which it was used. Applicable taxes are added.

The free plan blocks once its included volume is used. Paid plans also stop at the included volume until you choose a spend cap. If you set a spend cap, traffic can continue on overage pricing until that cap is reached, then blocks. Enforcement runs on a five-minute cycle, so a limit can be overshot by up to one cycle of traffic before blocking takes effect.

Changing plans, cancelling, and refunds

You can change plans or cancel at any time from the dashboard, or by emailing support@unmap.dev.

Switching between paid plans takes effect immediately, and the difference for the remainder of the period is prorated on your next invoice. Moving from a paid plan to the free plan takes effect at the end of the current billing period: you keep the plan you have already paid for until then, and there is no further charge.

We do not refund partial months or unused calls. If you believe a charge is wrong, write to support@unmap.dev within 30 days of the invoice date and we will review it; where we agree it is wrong, we correct it. Nothing in this section limits rights you have under consumer-protection or other law that cannot be waived by agreement.

Failed payments

If a renewal charge fails, your API keys are blocked immediately. There is no dunning grace period. Stripe retries the charge automatically, and a successful retry unblocks your keys with no action from you. If the retries are exhausted, Stripe cancels the subscription and your account returns to the free plan and its limits. Your account, keys, and settings are not deleted when that happens.

Caching and data use

You may cache maps and geocoding results permissively unless a source licence or separate written agreement says otherwise. That permission survives cancellation: results you have already cached stay yours to keep and to serve. The API may cache successful geocoding responses at the Cloudflare edge for up to 24 hours without the API key, and routing responses per key for up to one hour.

You are responsible for following laws, source licences, privacy duties, attribution duties, and user notices that apply to your application.

Attribution

Attribution is a licence condition, not a preference. Map and address data is (c) OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License (ODbL), and place names include information made available under the Open Government Licence – Canada from Natural Resources Canada. Keep the attribution the API and styles hand you visible and legible to your end users. Removing or hiding it breaches these terms and the underlying licences.

Acceptable use

Do not use unmap to attack systems, evade rate limits, resell access as an unmanaged proxy, overload the service, violate source licences, infringe rights, or process data you do not have the right to process.

Do not bulk-extract tiles, geocoding results, or routing results to assemble a substitute dataset or a competing maps product. Ordinary application caching is fine and encouraged; systematic harvesting of the corpus is not. Do not use unmap for anything unlawful, and do not try to reverse engineer or circumvent the authentication, quota, or spend-cap systems.

Intellectual property

We keep every right in unmap: the software, APIs, styles, cartography, tile builds, documentation, and brand. Nothing here transfers them to you.

You keep every right in your applications, your data, and the maps you build with unmap. We claim no ownership of your content, and we do not use your API traffic to train models or build advertising profiles.

Underlying open data stays under its own licence. Our rights and yours are bounded by those licences, and neither of us can grant more than they allow.

Availability and support

unmap aims to be reliable, but these terms do not promise an uptime SLA or a support response time. Any SLA, service credit, support commitment, or custom term must be stated in a separate signed agreement.

Support is by email at support@unmap.dev, best effort.

Accuracy and disclaimers

Maps, geocoding, and routing can be incomplete or wrong. Do not use unmap as the sole source for emergency response, safety-critical navigation, legal boundary decisions, or other high-risk use without independent verification.

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. Where the law does not allow these exclusions, they apply only as far as it does.

Limitation of liability

Neither party is liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost data, or business interruption, even if it was told those were possible.

Our total liability for all claims arising out of or relating to unmap is limited, in aggregate, to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or USD 100 if you paid us nothing in that period.

These limits do not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including fraud, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Indemnity

You will defend and indemnify us against third-party claims arising from your use of unmap in breach of these terms, from your applications and content, or from your infringement of someone else's rights. We will defend and indemnify you against third-party claims that unmap itself, used as permitted here, infringes their intellectual property. In each case the indemnified party must give prompt notice, reasonable cooperation, and control of the defence. These indemnities cover third-party claims only and are subject to the liability limits above.

Suspension and termination

You may terminate at any time by cancelling in the dashboard or emailing us; billing then follows the cancellation rules above.

We may suspend or limit access for abuse, security risk, unpaid invoices, spend-cap or quota enforcement, or legal requirements. For an ordinary breach we will give notice and a reasonable chance to fix it before terminating. For abuse, security risk, or unlawful use, suspension can be immediate.

On termination your right to call the API ends. Cached results you already hold remain yours under the caching section. The sections on caching, attribution, intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, and governing law survive.

Changes to these terms

We may change the service, plans, limits, and APIs. We may also change these terms. For material changes we give at least 30 days' notice, by email to your account address or by a notice on unmap.dev, and the new version takes effect on the date it states. Changes required by law, or needed to address a security or abuse problem, can take effect immediately. Continuing to use unmap after a change takes effect means you accept it; if you do not, cancel before then. Every version carries an effective date and a version number at the top of this page.

Force majeure

Neither party is liable for a delay or failure caused by something outside its reasonable control, including infrastructure or network provider failures, natural events, war, labour action, or government action. Payment obligations already incurred are not excused.

Assignment

You may not assign these terms without our written consent. We may assign them to an affiliate or to a successor in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, on notice to you.

General

If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stays in force and that provision is read down to the smallest change needed to make it enforceable. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the pricing page, the published plan limits, and any signed agreement between us, are the entire agreement about unmap and replace every earlier version and discussion. Nothing here makes us partners, agents, or joint venturers.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

Talk to us first: email support@unmap.dev describing the problem, and we will try to resolve it within 30 days. If that fails, the courts of Alberta sitting in Calgary have jurisdiction over the dispute, and both of us submit to them. Nothing here prevents either party from seeking urgent injunctive relief elsewhere, or removes a consumer's right to bring a claim where mandatory local law says they may, including in Québec.

Language

These terms are published in English and in French. Where the two differ, the English version governs interpretation, except where applicable law requires otherwise. Les parties ont exigé que les présentes conditions et les documents qui s'y rattachent soient rédigés en anglais, une version française leur ayant été remise.
