map-announcer: a map that says where it is

A new registry item, map-announcer, tells a screen reader user the street, nearest address and places nearby at the centre of the map, in English or French, for React and Vue.

  • map-announcer: when the map stops moving it waits 600 ms, then writes one sentence into a polite live region with the street under the centre, the nearest address and up to three places nearby, each with a distance and a compass direction.
  • With the map focused, the arrow keys pan and Enter says it again. Outside Canada it says so and stops, and a lookup the map has moved on from is aborted and never spoken.
  • It draws a cross at the centre in your --foreground. Turn it off with crosshair={false}.
